A quick glance at placings in the Monticello High School cross country teams’ first two meets can be somewhat misleading.

The Panther girls were third in the Orange Division (Classes 2A and 3A), and eighth overall, in the season-opening Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational Aug. 31. The boys were third in the Orange Division and 12th overall.

More recently, the Monti girls were fourth and the boys were sixth at the Bob Brown Invitational, the annual meet held at the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park and hosted by Iowa City Regina. That was held Sept. 5.

A closer look reveals something much more encouraging for Panther fans. At Prairie, Monticello was first among Class 2A boys and second among 2A girls. In Iowa City, the Panther girls were the top 2A school, and the boys were second only to top-ranked Tipton among teams in their class.

Most of the teams that beat them were from larger schools. Meets that include such opposition have been staples of Monticello’s early-season schedule for many years.

“It’s nice to face that competition,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “It’s going to do nothing but make you better.”

For the girls, sophomore Karle Kramer and freshman Emma Althoff have led the way. Kramer was 18th overall, and Althoff 20th, at Prairie. At the Iowa City meet, they traded roles, with Althoff finishing ninth and Kramer 14th.

“We’ve clearly had a one and two runner stepping up,” Sauser said.

The 3-4-5 spots have been occupied by sophomores Lydia Recker and Triniti Etzel, and freshman Emily Hendricks to this point.

“It’s a very young team, but we’ve got to get more consistency with our runners. Overall, though, the results have been pretty positive,” Sauser said. “We like what we’ve seen so far.”

For the boys, junior Jasper Nietert has emerged as the top runner so far this season, finishing 57th in the Prairie meet and 14th in Iowa City. Junior Zach Chapman was next in both meets, and the remaining spots have been a scramble, with illness and injury factoring in. Senior Cole Cruise and freshman Harrison Ahlrichs were the other two Panthers who finished in the team’s top five in both meets, and sophomore Grant Hospodarsky improved his 2018 Iowa City time by about two minutes.

“Three of our potential scorers weren’t there (at Iowa City),” the coach said. “Other than that, we’re pleased with the first two meets. It has been a good start.”

Junior varsity

Monticello’s junior varsity teams also competed at those two meets. The boys were fourth at Prairie and seventh at Iowa City. The girls finished third at Prairie and sixth at Iowa City.

The team’s top individuals for the girls were Faith Hansen at Prairie and Dru Kramer at Iowa City; for the boys it was Jayden Orcutt at both meets.
