The Monticello High School boys soccer team continues to battle through a challenging schedule with “grit, determination, and noticeable growth,” according to head coach Todd Norton.
While the scoreboard hasn’t always reflected the Panthers’ progress, the team has made clear strides as the season unfolds, the coach said.
Through nine games, sophomore Griffin Brokaw leads the Panthers offensively with two goals, including a recent strike against Prince of Peace.
On the back line, senior Brennon Merfeld has emerged as the team’s anchor on defense, consistently stepping up as a leader and the Panthers’ most reliable defender, Norton said.
In goal, Norton added, junior Caleb Tubbs has had a strong season, facing an onslaught of shots from some of the top-ranked teams in the state with resilience and poise.
“Our record doesn’t tell the whole story,” said Norton. “We’re in a conference that includes some of the best teams in the state: No. 2 West Liberty, No. 3 Regina Catholic, and No. 10 Beckman – and our players continue to show up, improve, and compete with heart every game.”
Monticello’s most recent results include losses of 10-0 at Regina April 21, 8-0 at home against Bellevue Marquette April 22, 8-0 at home against West Branch April 25, 10-0 at West Liberty April 28, 9-1 at home against Clinton Prince of Peace April 29, and 7-0 at Anamosa May 2.
The Panthers are a young squad, with just one senior and two juniors. The rest of the roster is made up of hardworking sophomores and freshmen who are gaining valuable experience with each match, the coach said.
“We don’t have a lot of subs, so our guys are logging major minutes,” Norton added. “But their intensity and hustle are something I’m really proud of.”
Monticello will look to keep building momentum as it takes on the second half of their season, continuing to grow as a unit and laying the groundwork for the future.
