It has been an up-and-down season for many teams during this abbreviated high school softball campaign, and the Monticello Panthers experienced both during a four-game week.

Monticello won one of those games, as their record moved to 2-7 with one regular season week left.

Included were home losses of 5-3 to Durant June 29, and 10-0 to Anamosa June 30, followed by a 14-0, five-inning win at Tipton July 2, and a 12-0, three-inning home loss to West Liberty July 3.

Two of those losses were against ranked teams; as of July 2 West Liberty was rated seventh and Anamosa was ninth in Class 3A.

Against Durant, the Panthers were forced to play from behind after the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Monticello answered with a run in the bottom half, on an RBI double by Katie Roher, scoring Tori McDonald.

The Panthers pulled to within one run in the fifth when Brea Stahlberg doubled and then scored when Madison Butterworth reached base on an error.

Durant scored twice more in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. The Panthers got one of those back on Stahlberg’s second double of the game and an RBI single by Butterworth, but couldn’t close the gap further.

Monticello finished with nine hits. Roher and Stahlberg both went 2-for-3, Butterworth had two RBIs, and Mallory Steiner hit a double. Steiner also pitched, allowing just two earned runs, and took the loss.

The Panthers then faced Anamosa, which was ranked fourth in the state in Class 3A as of June 18 and came into this game with a 6-1 record. Monticello held the Blue Raiders off the scoreboard for three innings, but Anamosa broke the ice with a two-run homer by Lexi Bright, part of a three-run inning.

The Blue Raiders then scored two, three and two runs respectively in the final three innings on the way to their 10-0 win.

Monticello loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the sixth, trailing 8-0, but couldn’t bring a run across. The Panthers finished with five hits, singles by Jaelyn Aitchison, Reese Cox, Steiner, McDonald and Butterworth. Steiner pitched and took the loss.

On Thursday, July 2, Steiner pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks in a 14-0, five-inning triumph at Tipton.

The Panthers scored in each of the five innings, while collecting 12 hits. Roher batted 3-for-3 with two doubles. McDonald was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Aitchison and Steiner both went 2-for-4. DeLainy Fellinger knocked in three runs.

Monticello fell behind quickly in the July 3 home game against West Liberty, as the Comets scored seven runs in the top of the first inning.

The Panthers had first-inning singles by Cox and Steiner, but those wound up being the only two Monticello hits. Steiner pitched and took the loss.
