Monticello set a boys track and field school record in the sprint medley relay, the highlight of a two-week meet for the Panthers.

The team of Urijah Etzel, Grant Gassman, Tait Luensman and Tate Jesenovec ran the 800 total meters in 1:35.47, a school record, during the Anamosa Co-ed meet April 29. They took fourth place in the event.

Monticello finished eighth in the meet, scoring 51 points. The placing highlight was a win for Lincoln Schneiter in the discus, with a throw of 156-5. Etzel was third in the 110 high hurdles.

The Panthers then competed in the Pacha Relays, hosted by Clear Creek-Amana May 1 in Tiffin.

Monticello was seventh with 47 points. Highlights included a win for Aedan Althoff in the 3,200, 10:07.06; a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay; and third place finishes for the sprint medley and distance medley relays.

Some notes from head coach Greg Williams:

   • “Tate Smith continues to improve in the long jump.”

   • “Our 4x800 time continues to improve.”

   • “Tait Luensman had a very nice anchor leg on our 4x400.”

The Panthers will compete in the River Valley Conference Meet May 8 at Tipton, and will host the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet May 15 at Dean Nelson Field.
