Seventh-graders open season against five opponents


Seventh-grade team

     Five opponents kept the Monticello seventh-grade volleyball team occupied in the early part of the 2021 season.

     The Panthers started the season with home matches against Bellevue Sept. 2. The A team won 21-19, 21-17. Addison Norton had four kills, Avery Jurgens had four aces, and Emma Kromminga had three aces.

     The B/C team won three of five sets, with scores of 9-15, 15-11, 10-15, 15-6, 15-10. Stella McDermott served seven aces. Marissa Speltz had six aces, Adalyn Monk had five, and Macey Burlage had two.

     On Sept. 9, the Panthers played at Anamosa. The A team won 21-15, 21-14. Ace leaders were Greta Cooper and Kromminga with four apiece, Peyton Ries and Jurgens with three each, and Norton with two. Kromminga also had two assists, and Ries had two kills.

     Monticello won all five sets in the B/C match posting scores of 15-8, 15-5, 15-13, 15-13, 15-13. Leaders in the ace category were McDermott with eight, Speltz with seven, Mackie Marlowe and Monk with five apiece, Aubrey Lasack and Lindsi Olson with two each.

     At home against Cascade Sept. 14, Monticello swept the A match 21-15, 21-9. Aces were served by Kromminga (3), Cooper (3), Kayla Shady (2), Ries (2) and Norton (2). Karley Tobiason had two kills. Kromminga had two assists.

     In the B/C match, the Panthers won four of five sets, with scores of 16-14, 15-3, 15-7, 15-8, 10-15. Ace leaders were Speltz with four, Meghan Besler with three, and Allisen Capron, Bailey Brenneman and Lasack with two apiece.

     The Panthers then traveled to Wilton Sept. 16. The A team lost 12-21, 15-21. Jurgens and Tobiason had two aces apiece.

     The B/C team fell 5-15, 6-15, 1-15, 8-15, 11-15. Speltz served three aces.

     Monticello then played host to Maquoketa Sept. 21, and won the A match in three sets, 21-13, 20-22, 15-1. Kromminga served 10 aces in the match, while Ries had six and Norton had three.

     The B team won 21-19, 16-21, 15-5; while the C team swept three sets, 21-11, 21-10, 15-9. Top ace servers for the B and C teams were Jessica Kracke and Monk with seven apiece, Emee Himes-Luensman, Lena Lippstock and Burlage with five each; Lasack and Capron with three each, and Olson, Speltz and Brenneman with two each.


Eighth-grade team


     Monticello played host to Maquoketa Sept. 21, and won two out of three matches. The A team won 21-19, 21-23, 15-3. Paige Rickels served 17-for-17 wth six aces, and had seven assists. Naryah Trenkamp had two kills, and served 11-for-11 with two aces. Kennedy Hermsen had five kills and two assists.

     The B team lost 13-21, 21-11, 14-16. Kiara Mysak served 13-for-15 with eight aces. Haleigh Folkers served six aces.

     In the C match, Monticello won 21-13, 17-21, 16-14. Stella Flynn had two kills and two aces. Samara Olivarez and Chyna Davis each had four aces and a kill. Neveah Norton had three aces.
