Sophs complete winning month


Sophomore team

     Monticello’s sophomore volleyball team finished the September part of its schedule with a winning record overall.

     The Panthers started the season with 2-0 sweeps of Easton Valley Aug. 31 and Bellevue Sept. 2, both in Monticello.

     On Sept. 4, they played in a tournament at Dyersville Beckman and won the consolation bracket, going 3-2 overall.

     Monticello traveled to Center Point-Urbana Sept. 7 and won two sets to one. Kendra Jacobs totaled 22 digs. Sami McElmeel served eight aces. Raegan LaGrange had three kills and 100 percent serving efficiency.

     At Anamosa Sept. 9, Monticello won 2-1. Lake Schnoor had three kills. Kinzi Schlarmann served five aces, and Taylor Gassman had four. That was followed by an 0-2 loss at home against Cascade Sept. 14.

     Next, the Panthers played at Wilton, and rallied to win 2-1.

     “I was really proud of how the girls battled back after losing the first set against a really good Wilton team,” coach Allison Ries said. “We came out in the second set with a lot more energy and stayed aggressive offensively.”

     Following an 0-2 loss at Camanche Sept. 23, the Panthers played in a Sept. 25 tournament at Cascade, going 1-3.

     Back home against Northeast Sept. 28, Monticello won in two sets, 25-23, 25-13. Gabi Barnhart led with five kills. Schlarmann had six aces on 11 serves.

     Through Sept. 28, the team was 4-2 in River Valley Conference matches and 10-7 overall.


Freshman team

     The Monticello freshman volleyball team played host to both Cascade and Anamosa Sept. 27.

     Against Cascade, the Panthers lost in three sets, winning 21-14, and losing 15-21, 7-15.

     Monticello lost to Anamosa in two sets, 17-21, 14-21.


Eighth-grade team

     Monticello had two eighth-grade opponents in volleyball action last week.

     The Panthers played host to Northeast of Goose Lake Sept. 28, and split two matches. The A team won in three sets, losing 18-21 but then winning 21-9. 15-5. Naryah Trenkamp served 18-for-18 with eight aces, and had two kills. Paige Rickels served 14-for-15 with nine aces and made five assists. Koye Jaeger served 4-for-5 with two aces.

     The B team lost 14-21,15-9, 13-21, 8-15. Kiara Mysak served 8-for-9 with six aces. Anna Grant served 4-for-5 with two aces. Claire McElmeel served 5-for-6 with three aces. Zoe Lagunes-Torres served 6-for-6 with four aces. Stella Flynn served 5-for-6 with one ace.

     On Sept. 30, the Panthers traveled to play North Cedar, and again split a pair of matches. In the A match, Monticello won 21-11, 22-10. Ava Zimerman served 5-for-5 with four aces. Hannah Butterworth served 4-for-5 with two aces, and had six kills. Kennedy Hermsen served 5-for-7 and had two assists. Rickels served 5-for-5 and made six assists. Macy Dusanek served 3-for-3. Trenkamp served 9-for-11 with two aces. Jaeger served 4-for-5.

     Monticello lost the B match 15-9, 14-16, 3-15, 6-15. Andrea Giegerich had four kills. Haleigh Folkers served 7-for-7 with three aces. Chyna Davis had three kills and two aces. Cambryn Lee had one kill. Sam Ruchti served 3-for-3.
