United Church invites public to community picnic, Aug. 18

Enjoy the Free Community Picnic on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Monticello.
Sponsored by community businesses, churches, and individuals, this picnic is planned to enjoy conversations with friends and neighbors and kick off the school year.
Hosted at the United Church of Monticello (123 N. Chestnut St.), the picnic is open to all in the community. Hamburgers will be grilled by the Jones County Beef Producers; the menu also includes hot dogs, chips, string cheese, carrots, homemade cookies, lemonade, and water.
According to Keith Stamp from the United Church of Monticello, “The picnic is planned for this evening because the school open houses are scheduled on the same night, Aug. 18. The United Church of Monticello is hosting the event to provide opportunities for individuals in our community to come together for food, conversation, and to enjoy the start of a new school year of learning for our community’s children.”
Tables will be set up on the lawn and in the lower level of the church. Community members will assist with preparing and serving the picnic.
Because of the generous contributions and donations, there is no charge for the picnic. To volunteer to help that evening or with questions, contact Keith Stamp at 319-480-1881 or Janet Martin at 319-480-0699.
