Wildcats are fifth in TRC tourney

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley sent 10 wrestlers to the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament Jan. 29 at Lisbon, and finished fifth out of nine teams with 98 points.

     One Wildcat reached the finals: Brady Davis, who finished second at 220 pounds, losing a tough 1-0 decision to Louis Hamlett of Starmont.

     Four MV wrestlers finished third: Michael Schaul at 152, Aiden Salow at 182, Nathan Beitz at 195, and Devin Smith at 285.

     Mason Jolley was fourth at 145. In fifth were Brenden Frasher at 106 and Tyreese Crippin at 138. Placing sixth were Arion Rave at 126 and Kobe Peter at 160.

 

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley held Alburnett to just one point in the fourth quarter while scoring eight, on the way to a 38-27 home win over Alburnett Jan. 28. The Wildcats (6-5, 11-7) trailed 17-15 at halftime. Haley Ronnebaum scored nine points and made nine steals for MV. Kennedy Rausch had nine points as well. Bianka Ronnebaum scored eight points, Carissa Sabers had six points and three assists, and Kylie Chesnut had six points and five steals.

     On Jan. 29, the Wildcats won a non-conference home game over Turkey Valley, 44-41. Bianka Ronnebaum scored 12 points, and Ella Mensen came off the bench to score 12 points as well. Chesnut had nine rebounds.

 

Boys basketball

Maquoketa Valley sustained a pair of defeats in boys basketball action last week.

     The Wildcats (4-6, 7-10) traveled to play Clayton Ridge in a non-conference game Jan. 24, and lost 45-20. The Eagles took a 28-9 lead into halftime over MV, and remained in control after that. Avery Holtz paced the ‘Cats with eight points. Kody Hoeger and Toby Grimm had three points apiece.

     On Jan. 28, the Wildcats played host to Alburnett in Delhi, and lost 44-38. Hoeger scored 14 points and Holtz had 11 for MV. Lance McShane had five points and five rebounds. Brock Trenkamp had foru points and six rebounds, while Grimm had four points and four assists.
