Wildcats get win, loss in TRC action


Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley split a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference, West Division boys basketball games last week.

     The Wildcats (1-1, 4-3) traveled to East Buchanan Dec. 14 to open its Tri-Rivers Conference West Division schedule, and won 65-36. Four Wildcats scored in double figures. Avery Holtz had 14 points, while Lucas Orcutt, Brock Trenkamp and Kody Hoeger scored 12 apiece. T.J. Cook led the team in rebounds with seven, while Orcutt, Trenkamp, Hoeger and Lance McShane grabbed six apiece. Holtz made six assists.

     The Wildcats then were handed a 97-40 defeat at North Linn Dec. 17. Holtz led MV with 11 points. Hoeger came off the bench to score nine, and Trenkamp added six. Hoeger and McShane had seve rebounds apiece. Toby Grimm made two steals.


Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley had a win and a loss in girls basketball action last week.

     The Wildcats (1-2, 5-4) played at East Buchanan Dec. 14, and fell by a score of 41-23. The host Buccaneers led 15-6 at halftime. Carissa Sabers led MV with eight points. Kylie Chesnut had five points and eight rebounds.

     At North Linn Dec. 17, the Wildcats lost 60-35. Chesnut had a double-double for MV with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bianka Ronnebaum had five points and four assists. Sabers made three steals.



     Maquoketa Valley kept busy with a wrestling double dual meet and a tournament in the space of three days last week.

     MV traveled to Arlington for a double dual meet at Starmont Dec. 16. The Wildcats lost to North Linn 39-36, and defeated Starmont 42-36.

     In the North Linn match, Devin Smith won by fall at 285 pounds, and the Wildcats won five other matches by forfeit. Six Wildcats won by fall against Starmont: Brenden Frasher, Tyreese Crippin, Michael Schaul, Aiden Salow, Nathan Beitz, and Brady Davis. Smith won by forfeit.

     Maquoketa Valley then placed sixth out of 13 teams at the North Linn Invitational Dec. 18, scoring 97 points. Dyersville Beckman won the tournament with 147.

     The Wildcats had two champions: Schaul at 152 pounds and Davis at 220. Davis pinned all four of his opponents. There were also two third place finishers: Beitz at 195 and Smith at 285.
