Wildcats go to double dual, tourney

Wrestling

     A double dual meet and a tournament occupied the Maquoketa Valley wrestling team in last week’s action.

     Maquoketa Valley competed in a double dual wrestling meet Jan. 20 at Lisbon, losing 45-21 to East Buchanan and 72-9 to Lisbon. Michael Schaul pinned both of his opponents in the meet. Kobe Peter won a 7-2 decision in the East Buchanan dual. Brady Davis scored an 8-5 win over his Lisbon opponent.

     On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Wildcats competed in the John Byers Invitational at Midland of Wyoming. MV totaled 94 points to finish in seventh place out of 14 schools.

     Schaul was champion of the 152-pound weight class, winning two matches by technical fall and the finals by a 7-4 decision over Noah Trexel of Southeast Polk. 

     Davis also was a champion, at 220, winning three matches by fall. In the finals, he pinned Logan Wright of West Branch in 37 seconds.

     Devin Smith finished second at 285 pounds.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley had three Tri-Rivers Conference boys basketball games last week, winning one of them.

     The Wildcats (4-5, 7-8) opened their busy week with a 54-46, double overtime victory at East Buchanan Jan. 18. MV outscored the Buccaneers 10-2 in the second extra session to claim the win. Avery Holtz scored 16 points and made four assists. Kody Hoeger had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Landen Deutmeyer added eight points, and Lucas Orcutt had seven.

     At home against Edgewood-Colesburg Jan. 20, the Wildcats lost 62-55. Holtz scored 13 points and had four assists and three steals. Hoeger had 12 points, Toby Grimm came off the bench to score 11, and Brock Trenkamp had eight.

     On Jan. 21, the Wildcats played host to North Linn and lost 68-24. Scoring leaders for MV were T.K. Cook with six, Hoeger with five, Trenkamp with four and Orcutt with three. Cook also had seven rebounds.

 

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley picked up one victory in three Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball games last week.

     The Wildcats (5-5, 9-7) played at East Buchanan Jan. 18, and lost by a score of 62-32. The key stretch was in the middle two quarters, when the Buccaneers outscored MV 32-7. Kylie Chesnut led the ‘Cats with a 10 points, and pulled down five rebounds. Bianka Ronnebaum had five points and 10 rebounds. Caelyn Sands came off the bench to score eight points.

     On Jan. 20, the Wildcats played host to Edgewood-Colesburg in a rescheduled game from a Jan. 14 postponement. MV won 50-32, thanks largely to a third quarter in which it outscored the Vikings 22-3. Chesnut had 13 points and seven rebounds in the game. Sands had nine points,  Bianka Ronnebaum added eight points, and Carissa Sabers had seven points and seven rebounds. Kennedy Rausch made five steals.

     Maquoketa Valley then played host to North Linn Jan. 21, and lost 68-31. Leading scores for the ‘Cats included Erin Knipper with nine, Chesnut with six, Bianka Ronnebaum with five and Haley Ronnebaum with four. Chesnut had nine rebounds.
