Wildcats head to postseason

Volleyball

     Two matches ended the regular season last week for the Maquoketa Valley volleyball team.

     Maquoketa Valley played host to Central City for Senior Night Oct. 5, and lost in four sets, winning 25-19 and falling 17-25, 20-25, 18-25. Kennedy Rausch had 34 assists, as MV posted 41 kills. Kylie Chesnut had 12 of those, Haley Ronnebaum had 11, and Carissa Sabers had eight. Defensively, Leah Ries had nine digs, Rausch had eight, Avery Krapfl had seven, and McKenna Thompson had six. Anna Deutmeyer and Chesnut had two blocks apiece. Ries served five aces.

     Then, the Wildcats closed out their regular season with a 7-25, 11-25, 15-25 loss at East Buchanan. Chesnut had six kills. Rausch had seven assists, and Keira Leytem had five. Chesnut had four blocks; Bianka Ronnebaum and Sabers had two apiece. Krapfl made five digs, and Thompson had four.

     MV (1-6, 4-18) will compete in the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament beginning Oct. 14, and will open Class 1A regional play Oct. 18 at Easton Valley.

 

Football

     Starmont jumped to a 24-0 lead by halftime, and went on to a 45-0 victory over Maquoketa Valley in Class A, District 4 football Oct. 8 in Delhi.

     The Wildcats (0-5, 1-6) were held to 42 total yards of offense. Defensively, Carter Klaren recovered a Starmont fumble. Lucas Orcutt was the team’s leading tackler with nine, Lance McShane had five, while Landen Deutmeyer, Devin Meeks and Klaren had four apiece.

 

Cross country

     Maquoketa Valley posted a fifth place finish in the boys varsity race at the North Linn Invitational cross country meet Oct. 9 in Troy Mills.

     The Wildcats totaled 159 points, 30 behind fourth place finisher Williamsburg. Marion won the meet with 47, Tipton was second with 90, and Solon placed third with 94.

     Cy  Huber led MV, finishing fifth overall with a time of 16:46. Nolan Ries was 16th in 17:20, Michael Schaul took 23rd in 17:41, Matthew Schaul was 54th in 18:40, and Arion Rave placed 61st in 18:58. Toby Grimm was clocked in 20:13, and Landin Frasher finished in 20:19.

     MV’s girls ran in the junior varsity race. Isabel Imler led the team with a seventh place finish in 22:33.
