Yates' discus throw is second all-time at MHS

   Zach Yates cemented his name in the Monticello High School boys track and field record book with an astounding early-season discus throw during the Wilkinson-Pinckney Relays March 29 at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

   Yates threw 178-foot-8 to win the event. It earns him an automatic spot in the Drake Relays later this month, and leaves him ranked second all-time in MHS history.

   To put that in perspective, Yates’s distance sits behind that of Isaac Holtz (180-1, in 2014) and ahead of Devonte Merrill, both of whom became state champions; and Jordan Williams, who was a state runner-up in the event.

   Yates, a senior, was one of several Panther throwers who performed well at the meet, against exclusively larger schools. Preston Ries was second in the discus. In the shot put, Ries was third and Yates eighth.

   The junior varsity discus throwers had 4-5 finishes, with Lincoln Schneiter and Carter Holub; Malcolm Clark and Jordan Snow were 7-8 in the JV shot put.

   “Nice job by our throwers,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “They were all able to throw a career best in their event.”

   Monticello also had a fifth place finish from its distance medley relay.

   “They ran well for our fifth place finish against all (Class) 4A schools,” the coach said.
