Years Gone By

10 years ago:
• Hannah Thompson finished second overall, leading the Monticello girls golf team to the Tri-Rivers Conference championship at the conference tournament May 6 in Manchester. It was the third conference title for Monticello in the past six years, but the first since 2009. The Panthers finished second the past three seasons. This is the last year the Panthers will be in the Tri-Rivers Conference. (5/8/2013)

• The newest addition to the entertainment roster for the Great Jones County Fair will be the “Doodlebops.” The concert will be a 6 p.m. show on Sunday, July 20. This popular Disney feature act airs on the Disney channel daily. (5/14/2008)

• Monticello High School Pantherettes took a win over Maquoketa and Manchester in a triangular golf meet here April 4. Meet medalist was Jan Himebaugh with 43. (5/10/1973)
75 years ago:
• Improving more and more every year, the Great Jones County Fair is this year scheduled to run four days beginning on Aug. 18. This change from the three-day fair which Eastern Iowa has been accustomed to, was announced yesterday by Harry Stuhler, president of the Jones County Fair board. The addition of time was made at the request of thousands of people who had found it impossible to see everything of interest in the short three days. Fair officials are planning what will be the biggest fair in nearly a century of continuous operation. (5/13/1948)
• Work was completed last week on the new parking lot at the John McDonald Hospital, A crushed drive was made connecting the old parking lot with the cement court formerly used for tennis. A new cement drive was also constructed under the front canopy. (5/13/1948)
100 years ago:
• Have you seen the new four cent postage stamp? It bears the portrait of Martha Washington, and is said to be the first United States stamp to bear the picture of a woman. (5/10/1923)
