   • Jones County now has a woman lawyer. She is Nancy Shimanek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Shimanek, Monticello. Miss Shimanek is believed to be the first woman from the county to obtain a law degree. She is following a family tradition by entering the law profession. Her father and brother, Robert, are attorneys in the law firm of Shimanek & Shimanek in Monticello. Her grandfather, the late Frank H. Shimanek of Oxford Junction, also was a lawyer. Being first is not unusual for Nancy. Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity opened its membership to women during the time she was attending law school at the University of Iowa. She was one of the first women to apply for membership.  (6/21/1973)

   • A move to give little girls equal time on the ball diamond has been made in Monticello due to the organization of Linda Schafer and Frank Fitzsimmons. They have started a softball team for girls going into fourth grade. All three schools are participating and so far 22-26 girls have turned up for practices. The girls are divided into two teams and play at 6 p.m. every Thursday at the diamond next to Sacred Heart. More girls are welcome to join.  (6/21/1973)
