Stop sign ordinances are passed

Two ordinances were fully approved, and one was partially approved, during a tidy, 30-minute regular meeting of the Monticello City Council May 19.

First, the council amended the Code of Ordinances by repealing Section 65.03, subsection 3, pertaining to a four-way stop intersection of East Washington Street and South Maple Street.

Jones lands Student of Month title

It came down to her very last chance, before Arri Jones was recently named Monticello High School Student of the Month for May.

“I was like, ‘finally,’ ” the MHS 2025 graduate said with a laugh. “I’ve been nominated for it a couple of times throughout high school, and in my last month of being there, I finally got it.”

Jones, 18, was nominated by MHS teacher Nancy Toenjes, who in her nomination form praised Jones for being “a self-motivated, high-achieving student for the last four years.

Design approved, bid date set for Public Safety Facility

Two pieces of action on the new Public Safety Facility project were approved by the Jones County Board of Supervisors during its regular meeting May 20.

The board approved both a bid date – June 17 – and a design plan, as presented by Darci Merrill of Solum Lang Architects, LLC, Cedar Rapids.

The $1.25 million project will be offered for bid including three stages. The base will be an 80-by-80-foot mass storage facility.

MCSD adopts cellphone policy

The Monticello Community School District has had its own version of enforcing the use of cellphones and electronic devices during the school day, but after Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new legislation on April 30, all Iowa school districts must adopt policies banning the use of cellphones during class time.
