Court rules in Bartram’s favor

     The Iowa Court of Appeals upheld a decision from the Iowa District Court, granting unemployment benefits to former Monticello Parks and Recreation employee Tami Bartram.

     In February of 2017, Bartram’s employment with the City of Monticello ended, causing her to file for unemployment. The city resisted the filing, and Bartram was then denied.

      Bartram then appealed the decision through the Division of Labor, and then through an administrative law judge, who stated she should have been eligible for unemployment benefits.

Monticello Christmas Concert, Dec. 9

     The Joyful Noise Women’s Choir and Monticello Men’s Chorus will present their Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Monticello (211 W. First St.).

     Refreshments will be served, and a free-will offering will be accepted for the Monticello Ministerial Association.

 

Info sought in Keleher’s robbery

     Overnight between Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, Keleher’s Jewelry in Monticello was broken into.

     Owner Tom Keleher shared on social media that the culprits broke into the front door, smashed the glass jewelry cases, and stole many pieces of jewelry.

     The robbery took place almost six years following a devastating downtown fire on Nov. 28, prior to Keleher’s move from E. First Street to S. Main Street.

OPN presents 3-D look at potential middle school design

     The schematic design phase for the new middle school is nearing completion, and representatives from OPN Architects were on hand at the Monticello School Board meeting Nov. 26 to display the progress.

     Preliminary designs have been the result of meetings between OPN, the facilities committee and Superintendent Brian Jaeger to compare ideas.

     What OPN presented Monday was a design big on angles, sloped roofs and collaborative spaces. It was cautioned that this is an early design, which certainly will be tweaked in the coming months.

County officials dive into state issues with legislators

     As the Iowa Legislature prepares for a new session after the New Year, Jones County’s area legislators took the time to visit with county officials during their Nov. 20 board meeting.

Workload prompts need for additional Treasurer’s deputy

     Things are busy and only getting busier inside the Jones County Treasurer’s Office. With that in mind, County Treasurer Amy Picray spoke with the Jones County Supervisors during their Nov. 20 meeting, asking to hire an additional full-time deputy treasurer to assist with the workload.

     “It’s gotten to the point where it’s very difficult to get anything done other than wait on customers,” Picray said.

‘Shop with a Cop’ planned for Dec. 10

     After the success of last year’s Shop with a Cop program, the Jones County Family Council is bringing it back.

     On Monday, Dec. 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., middle school children throughout Jones County will have the opportunity to scour the aisles of Wal-Mart in Anamosa to shop for the holidays, alongside a friendly law enforcement officer. The kids will be shopping for gifts for their loved ones and family members.

County passes full ATV/UTV ordinance

     Jones County officially has a new ATV/UTV ordinance in place.

     The Jones County Supervisors suspended the second consideration of the proposed ordinance during their Nov. 20 meeting, choosing to formally adopt the ordinance right away (due to lack of opposition).

     Upon the final vote, the room full of supporters of the ordinance erupted in a round of applause.

     This project was led by Amber resident Bobby Krum. Sheriff Greg Graver assisted in writing the ordinance, researching what several other counties already have in place.

Public Health conducts youth health survey

     There is a new face assisting inside the Jones County Public Health office in Anamosa. Jess Wiedenhoff was hired in August, and serves as the community health specialist.

     Wiedenhoff works alongside Jenna Lovaas, Public Health director.

     Wiedenhoff’s role involves working with community partners to help connect the public with the services needed. She is hoping to reach out to the schools to provide community health literacy.

Family Council offers holiday clothing, toy drive

     The Jones County Family Council is holding their annual kids’ clothes and toy community sale.

     The event will take place on Friday, Dec. 7 from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 8 from 8 to 11 a.m. The sale will be held at 301 Old Dubuque Rd. in Anamosa.

     They are now accepting donations of gently used clothes, toys, and books for the sale. Donations can be dropped off at 301 Old Dubuque Rd. on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 8 to 10 a.m., or Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 2 to 5 p.m.
