JRMC offering LSVT therapy

     Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is now offering LSVT BIG, an intensive, amplitude focused physical and occupational therapy program geared toward patients with Parkinson’s disease.

     Research on LSVT BIG has shown improved ratings on improved balance, improvements in activities on daily living such as bed mobility, increased trunk rotation, and faster walking with bigger steps.

     Kayla Kurt, PT, successfully completed the LSVT BIG training and is now certified to help patients using LSVT methods.

Search warrant obtained for Stephen’s properties

     On Feb. 22, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) obtained a search warrant for the residences of Greg Stephen in Monticello and Lake Delhi. The search warrant affidavit states that a device had previously been obtained from Stephen’s Monticello residence and was examined by law enforcement agents. The affidavit states the device was found to contain video clips believed to depict young, non-adult disrobed male individuals. Based on the investigation, the male individuals do not appear to be aware they were being recorded.

Jones Co. hosts active shooter training

     Jones County fire, EMS and law enforcement took part in active shooter training, Saturday, Feb. 17 at Jones Regional Medical Center. Despite being in the works for several months, Sheila Frink, Anamosa Ambulance director, said the timing coincidently was three days following the Feb. 14 school shooting in which 17 people lost their lives.

Monticello Police officer returns after 2017 accident

     Monticello Police Officer Bob Urbain is back on the job.

     In the middle of the night in mid-October, Officer Urbain was involved in a serious rollover accident near Welter Storage on Business Highway 151 South. Urbain was responding to a call when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. He entered the ditch and rolled several times.

     Urbain sustained non-life threatening injuries, but was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for his injuries.

Handbooks approved for 1-to-1 initiative

     Another step in the Monticello Community School District’s move to a 1-to-1 technology initiative was completed when the Monticello School Board approved the 1-to-1 Chromebook Initiative Technology Handbook.

     The approval came at the board’s regular meeting Feb. 26. District Technology Director Curt Tauke, who had gone through the handbook with the board at its Feb. 15 work session, was on hand Monday to take final questions before the approval.

County set proposed department head increases

     Jones County department heads now have a better idea of what the county is proposing for salary increases.

     The Jones County Supervisors approved salary increases for budgetary purposes during their Feb. 20 meeting. Department heads with and without staff supervision were the topic of discussion.

     The board spoke with the county’s HR director, Mike Galloway, via conference call during their meeting to discuss the compensation analysis Galloway put together for comparisons.

Sheriff Graver helps to give victims a voice

     Jones County’s own Sheriff Greg Graver is throwing his support behind a worthy cause to benefit crime victims’ rights.

     Graver has traveled to Des Moines on several occasions recently to speak with legislators and meet with Gov. Kim Reynolds in support of Marsy’s Law.

Jones Co. youth address legislators on substance abuse

     Jones County high school youth got the opportunity to see the Iowa Capitol and hear about the legislative process firsthand.

     On Feb. 21, 37 high school students and adults accompanied the Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition to Des Moines for the annual AC4C (Alliance of Coalitions for Change) Youth Day on the Hill. Of that total, Monticello High School had the biggest showing with 23 people.

Spahn & Rose names new vice president

     Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. has appointed John Cook as its Vice President, Supply Chain effective Feb. 15. In his new position, Cook will have overall responsibility for vendor and inventory management, purchasing, assortment planning, and product distribution.

Deconstruction bids approved for county property

     The former Dirks Oil Station in Wyoming is another step closer to deconstruction.

     During the Feb. 20 Jones County Supervisor meeting, the board approved an asbestos removal bid and a deconstruction bid for the county-owned property located at 311 W. Main St. in Wyoming

      Environmental Management Services in Dubuque won the asbestos removal at $3,800. Custom Dozing & Crane Service (Steve Dirks) won the deconstruction at $8,600.

     The deconstruction also includes building material removal/recycling, backfill of the site, and grading and seeding.
