MHDS region explores the future of RCFs

     Deb Schultz, Jones County Community Services director, met with the Jones County Supervisors during their Jan. 3 meeting to discuss the future of residential care facilities within the MH/DS region.

     Jones County is part of a nine-county mental health region. Schultz said there are four residential care facilities (RCF) within the region.

     “They total well over 200 beds,” she said or availability. “But we’ve been looking at bringing the number of beds down.”

Preliminary work begins on water tower painting

     During the recent Monticello City Council meeting on Jan. 3, the council heard an update on the water tower project.

     The city is looking to repaint the city’s water tower located off W. First Street.

     City Administrator Doug Herman said the first step is to contact and work with the various tenants to have their equipment removed and temporarily relocated. Several companies such as U.S. Cellular, Sprint, and Comelec have equipment on the top of the tower to assist with their services.

Theisen’s announces new director of IT

     Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto announced the hiring of Jared Ashland for the position of director of IT. In this role, Ashland will direct all functions related to technology and information systems. Ashland will begin his responsibilities on Jan. 16.

     Ashland joins Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto with years of information technology experience, including six years in various expanding roles at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, including vice president of IT where he was involved in system strategies, security, project management and IT capabilities/assessment.

Pike wins $50,000 in scratch-off game

     A Jones County man said a convenience store clerk’s scratch ticket choice led him to a big prize recently.

     Stuart Pike, Monticello, claimed one of the $50,000 top prizes available in the Iowa Lottery’s “$50,000 Holiday Super Crossword” scratch game.

     The 56-year-old said he bought his winning ticket about three weeks ago at Karde’s 151, 2100 S. Main St. in Monticello.

Industry tours kick off at Energy

     Energy Manufacturing, along with the Monticello Chamber, Sedona Staffing Services and Jones County Economic Development welcome you to join us on Thursday, Jan. 26 for a tour of the Energy Manufacturing facilities in Monticello.  

     Acquired by Ligon industries in 2013, Energy Manufacturing was founded in Monticello in 1944.  The company is dedicated to the world-class design and manufacture of hydraulic cylinders and fluid power components, and systems.

     Energy is located at 204 Plastic Lane in Monticello.

Absentee voting open for MCSD special election

     Absentee ballots are now available in the Auditor’s Office at the courthouse in Anamosa for all eligible voters in the Monticello School District for the Tuesday, Feb. 7 special election.

     This election would allow the Monticello Community School District to renew the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for another 10 years.

Safe Sleep Project hopes to help area families

     The Jones County Family Council works in collaboration with the Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC). Rachel Williams is the coordinator of the CPPC in Jones County.

     Recently Williams spoke about a new initiative the Family Council is taking on: the Safe Sleep Project.

     This project has been gaining momentum just within the last few months.

     Shortly after Williams started with the CPPC in the summer of 2016, she said they received an emergency request from a family needing a crib for their newborn baby.

Keltner sees need for more volunteers

     Amy Keltner, the director of the Jones County Volunteer Center, met with the Board of Supervisors during the Dec. 27 meeting to thank them for the new office space. Earlier this year, the Volunteer Center relocated from the Farm Bureau building in Anamosa to the Broadway Place Annex, property owned by the county.

     “It’s been six months since we moved and everything is going well,” remarked Keltner. “But we continue to increase the needs of our clients.”
