Camp Courageous Pineapple Gala, Aug. 19

     The 39th Annual Pineapple Gala will be Friday, Aug. 19 at the downtown Cedar Rapids Double Tree Hotel beginning at 6 p.m. This is one of Iowa’s largest charity silent and live auctions with hundreds of items available for bid. The silent auction includes everything from wine and golf packages; Hawkeye, Cyclone, and UNI packages; to numerous themed baskets. Highlights of the live auction are a weeklong stay at a lovely home in the mountains of Colorado, a condo on Cape Cod, and a lot more.

Kirkwood offers workforce education in Jones Co.

     Kirkwood Community College now offers workforce education to Jones County businesses. A one-time investment allows companies to train multiple employees throughout the year, based on their individual needs. The next course held on Tuesday, Sept. 12 focuses on goal planning and execution.

     Industrial and organizational psychologist Dr. Mel Gonnerman with the Peerman Group will introduce techniques for achieving workplace goals. His four-hour session will take place at the Veterans Hall in Monticello, 200 E. First St., from 1-5 p.m.

Residents question Mon Maq Dam project

     Residents throughout Jones County, specifically Monticello, filled the Jones County Board Room the morning of July 25 for Conservation Director Brad Mormann’s discussion with the supervisors regarding Mon Maq Dam.

     Mormann said this has been an ongoing project for the Conservation Board over the past 10 years. in that timeframe, and more recently, the board has reviewed numerous options for the dam site, bringing ideas to the public’s attention as well.

U of Colorado backs out of Stone Bridge project

     Ely’s Stone Bridge is now passable, by pedestrians and bicyclists only.

     Late last week, Secondary Roads employees installed gates purchased by the Jones County Historic Preservation Commission. The gates were installed on the north end of the bridge.

     During the July 25 Jones County Board of Supervisor meeting, Rose Rohr with the Historic Preservation Commission was present to update the board on some unfortunate news regarding the bridge project.

New ordinance allows cleanup of nuisance properties

     Jones County now has a new ordinance that would result in the rehabilitation and cleaning up of abandoned properties.

     Cities within the county, and the county itself, will ultimately benefit from the “Jones County Tax Sale Ordinance.” The purpose is to allow cities and the county to bid for and purchase tax sale certificates on abandoned property or vacant lots. These properties, if not maintained properly, would likely become public nuisances.

Anamosa Sleep Center receives accreditation

     Eastern Iowa Sleep Center in Anamosa recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

     “The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Eastern Iowa Sleep Center on meeting the high standards required to earn accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Ilene M. Rosen, AASM president. “Eastern Iowa Sleep Center is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”

Ohnward interns invite public to Pedal ‘Ohnward’

     Ohnward Bancshares, Inc. summer leadership interns, Jason Zhang, Lauren Heilig, Luke Bowman, Shannon Shovlain, and Nick Riedesel were encouraged to formulate a sustainable community driven program within Ohnward’s footprint. They decided to implement a healthy lifestyle initiative, titled Pedal “Ohnward.” Eldridge and Long Grove will serve as a pilot for this program.

Mon Maq Dam decision is tabled; meeting to come

     A decision on the future of Mon Maq Dam was pending, then rescheduled, then postponed, in a series of Jones County Conservation Board developments last week.                

     The board held its regular meeting on Monday, July 17 at the Central Park Nature Center, during which one of the agenda items was “Mon Maq Dam Project: Project Direction Determination.”

County residents seek supervisors’ opinion on dam

     With the Jones County Conservation Board meeting the night before, one of the topics of discussion during the July 18 Board of Supervisors meeting included the future of Mon Maq Dam in Monticello.

     Mike Davies, a resident of Anamosa, explained to the board that Jones County Historic Preservation presented results from a survey they put together concerning the options for the dam. Mike said the results showed that 93 percent of the residents of Jones County “don’t support removal of the dam.
