Flu outbreak affects many areas of the community

     You can’t turn on the local Iowa news or the national news right now without hearing about how widespread influenza (the flu) is throughout the country.

     According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), the flu is considered widespread throughout the entire continental U.S. with the exception of the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and the U.S. territory of Guam. It’s safe to say no matter where you live right now in the country, the flu is in your backyard.

Four Oaks closes Monticello program

     After operating in Monticello since 1980, Four Oaks has closed its program known as John McDonald Residential Treatment (JMRT), which provided foster group care for girls with emotional, behavioral, and mental health conditions.

Anamosa man charged with several robberies

     A 23-year-old Anamosa man has been arrested and is facing numerous charges stemming from a string of break-ins in Anamosa on Jan. 14 and 15.

     According to criminal complaints from Anamosa law enforcement, Luther Joe Gilbert broke into several Anamosa businesses in that timeframe: El Tapatio, a Mexican restaurant located at 300 W. Main St.; Daly Creek Winery, 106 N. Ford St.; and Serendipity Salon, 106 Maquoketa St.

Congressman Blum tours MVEC

     Congressman Rod Blum stopped in Jones County on Jan. 25 to visit with employees and tour Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative.

     The Anamosa-based company was proud to tout their new high-speed fiber Internet, MVlink.

     “There was a shortage, a void in the area,” shared Jeremy Richert, COO, in reference to the need for rural broadband. “Twenty percent of our customers had no access to Internet.”

     MVEC expanded its smart grid network to offer such services to their customers throughout their four-county area.

WLC, Volunteer Center sees need for county services

     Two organizations met with the Jones County Supervisors during their Jan. 23 meeting to discuss funding for the next fiscal year, 2019.

     Laurie Worden and Tris Langdon with Workplace Learning Connection (part of Kirkwood Community College) are asking the county for $1,023 for FY 2019, at 5 cents per capita. The seven counties that seek support from WLC fund the program anywhere from 5 to 10 cents per capita. Worden said they use the county funds to help leverage grants.

River Bend Foods group holding public meeting

     The next meeting of the River Bend Local Foods Group will be Thursday, Feb. 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at the USDA Service Center, 30 Chamber Dr., Anamosa.

     They will be discussing what the needs and desires are for a local foods promotion/program in Eastern Iowa. Activities can be geared for producers and consumers alike.

Arrest made in Lake Delhi accident

     Authorities in Delaware County have arrested a person associated with leaving the scene of an accident that took place on Jan. 8 on Lake Delhi. That accident resulted in the death of 23-year-old Alex Salow of Delhi.

     On Jan. 19, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Joshua Juengel of Manchester. His list of charges include:

     • Reckless driving

     • Making a false report

     • Leaving the scene of an accident (a felony)

     • Homicide by vehicle (a felony)

Water, Medicaid are predominant topics at Legislative forum

     It was billed as a forum to discuss economic issues that are important to Jones County businesses.

     But the Jones County Economic Development Legislative Forum on Friday, Jan. 19 focused more on statewide issues being tackled by the Iowa Legislature during its current session.

     On hand to make comments and answer public questions were Sen. Tod Bowman (D-Maquoketa), Sen. Dan Zumbach (R-Ryan), Rep. Lee Hein (R-Monticello) and Rep. Andy McKean (R-Anamosa).

Central Park Lake project moves along

     Work on the Central Park Lake Restoration Project has been non-stop in recent weeks.

     Conservation Director Brad Moorman gave the Jones County Supervisors an update on conservation projects during their Jan. 16 meeting.

     “The contractor has been busy,” he said. “They got rid of a lot of vegetation where they’ve been digging.”

     The lake project involves dredging and restoring the lake at the county park.

Sunday Commencement to stay

     A 2018-19 school calendar with no dramatic changes was approved by the Monticello School Board during its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 22.

     Two changes had been considered by the board at its Jan. 10 work session. First, the board considered whether to move Commencement from its traditional Sunday slot to a Friday evening for the next school year.
