Theisen’s announces new director of merchandising

     Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto announced the hiring of Jeffery Lee for the position of director of merchandising and inventory management. In this role, Lee will direct all functions related to purchasing, inventory management and visual merchandising in the stores.

     Lee will begin his responsibilities on Jan. 9, 2017, and is taking over the role vacated by Tony Theisen, formerly VP of purchasing as Theisen transitions into his new role of chief strategic officer on the board of directors.

Supporters fill courtroom for Stone Bridge

     Almost 50 people packed the Jones County District Courtroom the evening of Dec. 13 for the annual Secondary Roads five-year road construction program hearing.

     County Engineer Derek Snead and Assistant Engineer Todd Postel outlined several of the projects on the program, stemming from Fiscal Year 2018 through FY 2022.

     Postel reminded the crowd that projects typically take 12-14 months of planning before the physical work even begins. He said the projects listed for FY 2018 and 2019 are already in the works.

151 accident results in fatalities

     A two-vehicle accident on Highway 151 on Dec. 18 resulted in two juvenile fatalities.

     According to the Iowa State Patrol, Ryan Daniel Powers, 41, of Horicon, Wis., was driving a 2016 Kenworth Semi south on the highway. The second vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai Veracruz, driven by Brandon James Hunter, 32, of Monticello, was traveling east on 215th Avenue. Hunter slid through the stop sign and was struck by Powers.

City hires new ambulance director, C.J. Johnson

     The City of Monticello now has a new ambulance director.

     During the Dec. 19 city council meeting, the council unanimously approved the hiring of current ambulance department paramedic C.J. Johnson as the director.

At risk/dropout prevention allowable growth approved

     A motion to approve modified allowable growth request for at risk/dropout prevention, in the amount of $338,019, was approved by the Monticello School Board at its regular meeting Monday, Dec. 19 in the Administrative Board Room.

     That figure represents 75 percent of the $450,693 that the district will budget in the next school year for at risk and dropout prevention programs. The other $112,673 will come from property taxes, which are levied for the program every year.

Maquoketa WMA requests county’s participation

     During the Dec. 13 Jones County Supervisor meeting, the board heard a report from Monticello City Administrator Doug Herman on the Maquoketa Watershed Authority (WMA). Herman’s presentation ended with requesting the county consider participating in a 28E agreement regarding the watershed authority.

     Those government entities that are already a part of the 28E includes: Monticello, Manchester, Delhi, Lake Delhi and Delaware County. Herman said he plans to meet with the City of Onslow and the Jones Soil & Water Conservation District.

Jones Co. receives historic preservation grant

     The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced it has awarded $140,457 from two different programs for historic preservation projects in 16 Iowa communities and counties.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church (226 N. Cedar St.): Christmas Eve Services at 3:30 and 6 p.m. No Sunday service on Christmas Day.

 

Monticello Baptist Church (201 S. Sycamore St.): Christmas Eve ­Candlelight Service at 5:30 p.m. Christmas Day Service at 10:45 a.m.

 

Sacred Heart Catholic Church (210 E. Third St.): Christmas Eve Services at 4 and 6:30 p.m., and midnight Mass. Christmas Day Service at 10:30 a.m.

 

First Presbyterian Church (211 W. First St.): Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. Christmas Day Service at 10 a.m.

     On Thursday, Dec. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Olin Public/School Library, Philip Weirather will be speaking about the consequences and repercussions that could happen to anyone as a result of choosing to drink and drive.

Department pay increase request sparks controversy

     Roughly 20 county employees filled the Jones County Supervisor Board Room on Dec. 6. They were present to oppose a request from Community Services for an additional 5 percent pay increase for non-union staff.

     Earlier this fiscal year, the board approved a 15 percent pay increase for the same department. Deb Schultz, county CPC; and Lucia Herman, case management supervisor, were present at the earlier board meeting to request 20 percent. The board passed a 15 percent increase at that time.
