Speaker, panel highlight alcohol tax, underage drinking

     The theme of the evening on Sept. 26 was “prevention.”

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition hosted nationally known speaker, Dr. David Jernigan, at the National Motorcycle Museum. He spoke about the impact the State of Maryland has seen since increasing the beer excise tax in 2011.

     The event was titled: “An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.”

Lions Club Scrap Metal Project helps food pantry

     The Monticello Lions Club Scrap Metal Project began under the guidance of Art Kromminga in 2013. It has raised $13,218 since its inception.

Urban chickens now permitted within city limits

     You can now raise chickens within the city limits of Monticello.

     During the last Monticello City Council meeting on Sept. 18, fees associated with raising urban chickens were approved:

     • Application – $20

     • Bands – $3 per chicken

     • Deposit – $100

     The council looked into amending the city’s code of ordinances several months ago to allow urban chickens after a couple of residents asked about the idea.

Board welcomes new members

     The Monticello School Board said goodbye to two longtime members, welcomed two new ones, and elected a new president and vice president during its regular meeting Monday, Sept. 25.

     Angie Beitz and Peg Mere stepped down, after serving eight years apiece, and were commended for their service and presented with plaques by Superintendent Brian Jaeger.

     Joining the board were the two newly-elected members, Mandy Norton and Craig Stadtmueller, along with re-elected member Bud Johnson.

County formally turns down sale of dam

     Over the past few months, the Jones County Board of Supervisors have discussed amongst themselves and offered opportunities for the public to share their thoughts on the future of the Mon Maq Dam in Monticello. During the Sept. 19 board meeting, the board took unanimous action against considering the sale of the dam for private or non-profit ownership.

     Supervisor Joe Oswald complimented the effort and excitement out there in saving the dam, but admitted he had some reservations in selling the structure.

Fareway Stores helps families living with MDA

     Fareway Stores, Inc. recently partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to host the 7th Annual Fareway Stores MDA Golf Classic in Grimes. The event raised over $110,900 for MDA of Iowa, making it the best year for the golf tournament. Funds raised at this event will fund research and provide healthcare services and support for MDA families across the state.

Jones Co. awarded two Wellmark grants

     The Wellmark Foundation has awarded 12 Iowa organizations Matching Assets to Community Health (MATCH) grants. Organizations were able to request up to $100,000 in grant funding. To ensure community support for the grant project, communities were challenged to match this grant amount dollar-for-dollar. Each of the grant recipients submitted projects that can help individuals, families, and communities achieve better health through safe and healthy environments that encourage physical activity and access to and consumption of nutritious foods.

Council fails to accept lot proposal

     After the Monticello City Council could not come to an agreement at their last meeting concerning the city-owned lot at 224 N. Chestnut St., the council remained at an impasse yet again during the Sept. 18 meeting.

County refuses private offer to buy dam

     About a month ago, the county received a $50,000 offer from Steve Intlekofer of Monticello to purchase Mon Maq Dam on the Maquoketa River in Monticello.

     At the Sept. 12 Jones County Supervisor meeting, the board unanimously voted against Intlekofer’s offer. The reasoning, offered by legal counsel County Attorney Phil Parsons, was based on the fact that the county cannot sell property like the dam without considering all other offers or opening it up to other interested parties.
