New Avenue of Flags committee welcomes adoption of flags

     Last spring, long-time Avenue of Flags leader and volunteer, Linda Kleinow, announced she was no longer able to continue displaying the hundreds of American Flags throughout Oakwood and Sacred Heart cemeteries. It simply came down to lack of volunteers the tiring manhours Kleinow had to put into the program.

   Kleinow had been involved with Avenue of Flags since the mid-1990s.

Hearing set for Public Safety Facility

     During the May 6 Jones County Supervisors meeting, the board took another step toward moving along with the Public Safety Facility project.

   A public hearing was set for May 20 at 9 a.m. on the proposed facility.

   In July 2024, the board of supervisors voted 3-2 to use $1.6 million of the county's ARPA funds toward the facility.

   The purpose of the project is to house equipment and vehicles for Emergency Management, the Sheriff's Department, as well as other county departments.

Starlighters to debut first-of-its-kind play, featuring deaf cast using ASL

     “It’s not about being deaf or a marginalized culture. It’s not about the issues the deaf culture faces; it’s about issues we all face.”

   Grant Freeman, a man of many hats including playwright, wrote “Bury Me.” The play, performed by an all-deaf cast, will be told using interpretive ASL (American Sign Language). Four English-speaking translators will simultaneously translate the production.

   The play debuts at Starlighters II Community Theatre this weekend, May 16-18 and May 23-25.

Arduser expresses frustration stemming from March downtown fire

     Denise Arduser, owner of the buildings located at 215 and 221 E. First St., addressed the Monticello City Council during the Open Forum at the May 5 council meeting.

   In early March, a fire in the basement of Cliff's Radio & TV, owned by Cliff Payne, caused smoke damage in neighboring buildings, namely those owned by Arduser. Since then, she said she has not been able to collect insurance money for the damage to her buildings, nor do any renovations, until the Paynes make a move on their building.

Temple named grand marshal of Fourth of July Parade

     Exciting things are developing for the Monticello Fourth of July Parade.

     The theme was announced in April: “Colors of Flag.” This celebrates the 249th anniversary of America.

     In April, the Parade Committee also sought the public's help in nominating someone (an individual, more than one person, a group of people) to serve as grand marshal(s) of the Fourth of July Parade.

   Nominations were collected through April 22.

Picray presents county, landfill quarterly investment reports

   County Treasurer Amy Picray presented her quarterly investment reports during the May 6 Jones County Supervisors meeting. She had reports for both the county's funds and the Solid Waste Management Commission's (landfill) funds.

   For the county, the subtotal as a March 31 in CDs is at $5.67 million, down about $93 million from a year ago.

   "One change from a year ago," explained Picray, "which I like to see, is we actually have CDs at four different banks. Last year, it was just three."

Support your favorite local nonprofit on Great Give Day

     The Jones County Community Foundation (JCCF) is excited to announce its annual Great Give Day event on Wednesday, May 21.

   The Give to Grow Monticello committee will be supporting Great Give Day with a freewill donation lunch at Depot Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Depot Park is the greenspace across W. First Street from Citizens State Bank.)

Jones Co. Democrats to meet May 15

   The Jones County Democrats monthly meeting will be Thursday, May 15, starting at 6 p.m. at the Anamosa Lawrence Community Center (Rotary Room).

   The agenda and Zoom link will be sent out a few days prior to the meeting to all Jones County Democrats receiving their newsletter. If you are not receiving their newsletter, you can contact them ay jonescounty.ia.dems@gmail.com to get on the list.

Council approves upgrades to needed Aquatic Center equipment

     The Monticello City Council approved the purchase of two pieces of equipment needed in order to open the Aquatic Center for the summer season.

   During the council meeting on May 5, the council approved the purchase of an Enduro M32 Aquatic Vacuum System from Carrico Aquatic Resources, Inc. in Jefferson, Wis. The cost is $11,252.

MHS graduates take leadership roles at MNRC, Pennington

     There are some new faces at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Campus.

   In March, Chelsie Siebels started working at Pennington Square Assisted Living. She is the new assisted living director.

   In early May, McKenna Hall began her job at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as the director of nursing.

   Both are quite familiar with the Monticello community and are graduates of Monticello High School. Siebels was a member of the Class of 2006; Hall, the Class of 2015.
