Board sets public hearing on data center ordinance

     During the April 15 Jones County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board set a public for Tuesday, April 29, at 9:15 a.m. on the proposed Jones County Data Center and Cryptocurrency Ordinance.

   This issue stems from last fall when a representative from U-R Energy, a company that builds data centers and energy storage systems, visited with the board with the intent on creating data centers in rural Jones County.

GJCF Queen hosting build day for Sleep in Heavenly Peace

   The 2024 Great Jones County Fair Queen Addison Appelhans invites all ages to a community build day for Jones County’s Sleep (SHP) in Heavenly Sleep.

   SHP in a non-profit organization that builds and delivers beds to children who do not have a bed. Their motto: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!”

Coalition hosting free suicide prevention training

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition will be hosting a “LivingWorks safeTALK” training on Thursday, May 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Community Center, 600 E. Main St., Anamosa.

’25 GJCF stock car races canceled

     The Great Jones County Fair (GJCF) has had auto/stock car races since 1950.

   “Entertainment offered this year, for the first time, stock car races, which were gaining wide interest. The fair association had sought to satisfy all tastes and found more than 25,000 people jamming the grounds on Saturday, the last day of the fair, for the event.” (Source: “A Hundred Years of History: The Great Jones County Fair Centennial” book)

REAL ID deadline, May 7

     “One thing I think is a little misleading is that May 7 is the point where TSA will start requiring the REAL ID or another form of acceptable ID to fly. I feel a lot of people are thinking they have it before May 7 or they’re not going to be able to get it or to fly. That’s not the case.”

   Jones County Treasurer Amy Picray said her office has been busy helping customers get their REAL ID.

County takes action at Montiview Trailer Ct.

     Action was taken against Montiview Trailer Court, 21664 Business Highway 151, Monticello, during the April 8 Jones County Supervisors meeting, giving the tenants 30 days' notice to clean up the trash and refuse around the individual trailers.

Council approves several FY26 funding requests, seeks clarification from MACC

     A special Monticello City Council meeting was held on March 24 where members of the council heard multiple presentations from those representing area non-profits, requesting funds for Fiscal Year 2026.

   During the regular April 7 council meeting, the council took action on those requests.

   The council approved $3,000 for the Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition.

   The council approved $15,000 for Jones County Economic Development.

Council urges survey before approving fencing permit

   The Monticello City Council was asked to consider a permit filed by Dave Lumpa, S. Linden Street, for the installation of a chain link fence along the north and south sides of Lumpa’s property, as well as a privacy fence in the backyard.

   The matter came before the council during their April 7 meeting because Lumpa’s neighbors, Kim and Steve Tauke, did not sign off on the permit.

   Kim shared their point of view as to why they object.

Courthouse bathroom project wraps up; bids sought for new roof

   The first-floor bathroom project at the Jones County Courthouse is coming to an end.

   During the April 8 Jones County Supervisors meeting, County Auditor Whitney Hein updated the board.

   The contractor, Peak Construction, was working on installing all of the fixtures. Over the last couple of days, an electrician was onsite doing some wiring. The mini split units, providing air conditioning and heat, have been installed.

Board approves Riverview Rd. overlay project plans

     During the April 8 Jones County Supervisors meeting, the board heard about the preliminary plans for an HMA overlay project on Riverview Road, a joint project with the City of Cascade.

   The scope of the project is 1 mile of hot mix asphalt from Buchanan Street, east to the gravel portion of the roadway.

   County Engineer Derek Snead said the plan is to match the existing 22-foot-wide surface.
