Stone City Road Bridge closed until at least 2028

     The Jones County Board of Supervisors met in a special meeting on April 11 to formally close a bridge on Stone City Road over Crow Creek. The bridge is closed to all traffic until at least March 31, 2028.

   The bridge was physically closed by Jones County Secondary Roads on April 9.

   "We had a catastrophic failure," relayed Assistant Engineer Todd Postel during the April 11 board meeting.

Jones Co. Assessor’s Office explains ’25 assessment notices

     Jones County property owners have received their 2025 assessment notices in the mail. The assessment contained in the notice is the gross assessment and includes qualifying exemptions and abatements computed by the Jones County Assessor’s Office. It does not include the state designated rollbacks, homestead credits or exemptions, military exemptions, or family farm credits.

Council approves FY25 amendments, sets hearing for FY26 budget

     The Monticello City Council held a special public hearing at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7, prior to their regular meeting. The hearing was for the city's proposed property tax levy.

   No one was present to ask questions or offer comments. City Clerk Sally Hinrichsen said per Iowa Code, the hearing had to remain open for 10 minutes, despite no one present.

Council approves purchases of new street sweeper, sewer camera

     During the April 7 Monticello City Council meeting, the council held a public hearing and approved entering into a General Obligation Loan/Lease for the purchase of a new street sweeper.

   The curret street sweeper is a TYMCO, and Public Works would like to stay with the same model. Taking out a loan allows for delivery sooner rather than later. The city can get financing through TYMCO. The city also reached out to F&M Bank and Ohnward Back & Trust for financing.

Board keeps levy options open, awaits Capitol news

   With uncertainty looming over the final State Supplemental Assistance (SSA) increase figure that would be signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, Marcy Gillmore presented a wide variety of tax levy figures and options to the Monticello School Board during its work session April 9.

   While the Iowa House and Senate had both approved a 2 percent increase last week Gov. Reynolds had not yet signed it before Gillmore needed to present a published figure on April 10.

Hearing addresses conditions of Montiview Trailer Ct.

     A public hearing on April 1 concerning the condition and nuisance complaints at Montiview Trailer Court off Business Highway 151 in Monticello left the Jones County Supervisors wanting to see action taken sooner rather than later.

Second FY26 public hearing set for county budget

     After hearing from many Jones County taxpayers during the March 25 public hearing on the proposed property tax levy, the Jones County Supervisors are moving along in their Fiscal Year 2026 schedule to finalize the county budget.

   During the April 1 board meeting, the board set another public hearing concerning the budget for Tuesday, April 22, at 9 a.m.

Secondary Rds. working on joint project with Cascade

   There was much discussion during the April 1 Jones County Supervisors meeting concerning Riverview Road near Cascade and Bunker Hill Road in southern Jones County.

   The City of Cascade will be participating in an HMA (hot mix asphalt) overlay project on 1 mile of Riverview Road with Jones County Secondary Roads.

   Snead and Cascade are working on a 28E agreement and pre-construction agreement, which will come before the board for approval.

Board approves contract rock, surface stabilization contracts

     Surface stabilization and contract rock were discussed during the April 1 Jones County Supervisors meeting.

   The board approved the list of three gravel roads slated for surface stabilization this year: Forest Chapel Road, 65th Avenue, and Violet Road.

   Jones County Secondary Roads has been applying surface stabilization (magnesium chloride) to gravel roads throughout the county since 2012.

   "We've been doing this now for over a decade," said County Engineer Derek Snead.

Monticello flea market set to return April 27

     Make plans now to attend our annual Spring Flea Market, Antique, and Collectible Show being held on Sunday, April 27, at the Jones County Fairgrounds in Monticello.

   This is one of Iowa's largest flea markets with over 100 exhibitors (indoor and outdoor, weather permitting) selling a vast array of antiques and vintage items. If you are a collector, antique dealer, or simply a nostalgia seeker or bargain hunter, then this is one show you do not want to miss.

   There will be great food trucks on site.
